NOTE: THIS PROCESS WILL TAKE 6 TO 7 HOURS. Make sure you have allocated enough time before dark.
Rig:
Check the weather forecast one more time.
Take off your hearing aids and put them in the chargers.
Put the car keys in a baggy and put the baggy in your pocket.
PUT YOUR HAT ON!!!
Put the water shoes in the front seat.
Put the gallon of water in the trunk. There is no potable water at the lake.
Put some ear plugs in your pocket to keep the bugs out of your ears. Annoying.
Verify that the Teflon bearing is in the jar.
Verify that the mast raise pin is in the jar.
Put the jar in the box.
Verify that the mast raise/lower safety ropes to tie the trapeze to the pylons are in the box.
Verify that the front rug, bungee cord and the towel are in the box.
Verify that the sailing watch, Hobie tool, bungee cord(s), gloves, glasses retainer and cell phone are in the Hobie cooler.
Put the dry clothes, one towel, life jacket(s), smock (for really cold weather), Hobie cooler, dry clothes bag, paddle, box, and spare parts box in the trunk.
Put the wind meter in the trunk.
Verify again that the box is in the trunk.
Put the “anchor” in the box.
Put the breaker bar and sockets in the trunk.
Put a towel and the blue bottle on the passenger’s side seat.
Put a towel on the driver’s side seat.
Put the grass bag on the driver’s side seat back.
Put grass bag on passenger seat if you have a crew.

Open the gate.
Starting from the bow port side, verify that the:
Mast is bungeed to the trailer mast support.
Furler frame is bungeed to the mast.
Yellow A frame and yellow mast support are bungeed to the trailer toward the bow
Left front tie-down is tight.
Left rear tie-down is tight.
Left rudder is bungeed.
Left drain plug is tight.
Verify that the spare tire is on the trailer.
Yellow A frame and yellow mast support are bungeed to the trailer towards the stern.
Mainsail is in the pipe.
Bag of sail and stays is bungeed.
Right rudder is bungeed.
Right drain plug is tight.
Right rear tie-down is tight.
Right front tie-down is tight.
Drive the boat to the street using the lawnmower.
Disconnect the trailer.
Park the lawnmower somewhere inside the fence.
Put the hearing muffs on the lawnmower.
Close the gate.
Add grease to the bearing buddies until the red circle around the zerk pops up. Twist it off instead of pulling it off.
Insert the hitch on the Buick if necessary.
Back up the Buick to the trailer.
Attach the trailer and emergency chains to the car.
Attach the Buick wiring plug to the trailer wiring using the coiled extension cord (from the box).
Check that the lights work. Turn on the headlights (turn the little circle clockwise) and turn on the emergency blinkers. This should result in tail lights that are on but blinking brighter for emergency blinkers.
Crank the trailer jack all the way up!
Bathroom break.
Lock up the house.
Drive to Lake Dias Park or Blue Lake Park. Pronounced Die-as. Park facing upwind.
PUT YOUR HAT ON!!!
Put the instructions on the tramp.
Put the box on the tramp.
Toss the safety ropes on the tramp. near the port and starboard corners of the tramp towards the bow end.
Toss the one small rug and bungee cord from the box onto the trampoline near the mast step on the crossbar to support the mast as you move it back towards the stern.
Toss the towel on the on the trunk.
Unbungee snorkel.
Remove the bungee cord that holds the snorkel to the tramp. Put the bungee in the box.
Bungee the small rug to the crossbar.
Untie the jib sheets and lay them over the front of the cross-bar two lines on each side of the mast step. Make sure they are not twisted.
Remove the bungee cord from the trailer mast support. Take the mast off of the support and lay it down on the front rug. Put the cord and rug in the box.
Remove the ball bungee from the furler Put the ball bungee in the box.
Remove the bungee from the bow end of the A frame and mast supports. Leave the bungee cord on the trailer.
Remove the bungee from the stern end of the A frame and mast supports. Leave the bungee cord on the trailer.
Remove the bungee cord from the mast over the traveler.
Re-bungee just the rug to the rear crossbar.
Remove the yellow mast brace from the trailer and set it up to about 6 feet behind the rudders.
Un-velcro standing rigging. Put the straps in the box.
Unzip the snorkel and put it in the box. Jib on the tramp. Untie it from the jib rotator at the top. Put the snorkel in the box.
From the stern, rotate the mast until the front points to port.
Pull the stays, trapeze wires, jib. Make sure they are inside the rudders and the boom tube. Make sure nothing is hung on the jib blocks. If you do this right, connecting up the furler will be a snap.
Wire part of the halyard next to the mast.
Port shrouds and trapeze lines next.
Halyard rope part next.
Starboard shrouds and trapeze lines next.
Jib next. Stretch it out to make sure it isn’t under one of the wires.
Raise/lower rope on top.
Slide the mast so the head of the mast is on the yellow mast support and the base of the mast is at the mast step so the pin can be inserted. You may have to re-untangle the stays, jib and raise/lower rope during this process.
Check the knot at the top of raise/lower rope. Make sure it is still tight.
Attach the base of the mast to the stepper fixture with the pin from the jar. Pull the mast upwards so the fixture is up as far as it will go for the H14 hole.
Get the Teflon bearing out of the jar and put it in the mast step.
Tie the raise/lower safety ropes to the trapeze wires with a trucker’s hitch to keep it from falling sideways. TIGHT !!!. Make sure the trapeze lines are above the stays.
Verify that everything is stull untangled.
Halyards both line and wire must be inside all the other lines/shrouds.
Shrouds must be on top of the trampoline, be clear of the jib blocks on the tramp, the adjusters pointed towards the stern and the slack hanging off the tramp between the rudders.
Trapeze wires and their handles must be outside the shrouds and the handles must be on deck.
The safety ropes must be in front of the front crossbar.
Jib and all sheets directly attached to the blocks on the jib must be above the shrouds and trapeze wires and mast. The sheet that is between the blocks on the trampoline must stay below the mast.
Raise/lower rope must be on top of the jib.
The line between the jib blocks MUST be below the mast.
Make sure the main halyard is below the jib and all shrouds.
Everything else must be above the tiller.
Tie the mast raise/lower rope to the winch. Make sure it is not wrapped around the mast and is clear of all the other lines. It must be on top of everything.
Remove the yellow A frame from the trailer and put it about 2 feet in front of the front crossbar.
Put the yellow A frame in place.
Put with the mast raise/lower rope on the roller on the a-frame.
Crank up the mast a little bit to see if the mast turns to one side or the other. Tighten the appropriate safety line if it moves sidewards.
Verify that everything is still untangled and the shrouds are over the tramp.
Crank up the mast up the rest of the way until the raise/lower rope and shrouds are tight. The A frame will disconnect from the raise/lower rope and fall down. Be ready for the noise.
Jib forestay must be in front of the jib sheets. Both jib lines must be in front of the mast. The jib lines must be un-twisted. If either of these are not, re-thread the lines.
Put the A frame against the starboard side crossbar inside the hull.
Untwist the jib forestay from the jib if needed.
If the jib is furled, unfurl it.
Pull the furler string all the way out. Wind the furler clockwise about twenty times.
Put a towel under where the furler will be.
Connect the furler with the jib fore-stay in the third hole if you can get it there. MAKE SURE THE ADJUSTING ROPE IS FACING THE STERN.
Put the a-frame back on the trailer.
Un-bungee the front rug and put the rug and bungee in the box.
Connect the jib to the jib sheets.
Unfurl and furl the jib to test the furling mechanism.
Put the string from the furler through the cleat on the crossbar. Tie figure 8 on the end.
Release the raise/lower rope.
Put the raise/lower rope in the tramp pocket.
Retract the trailer winch ribbon.
Remove the pin from the stepper fixture and put it in the jar.
Bungee the yellow A frame and yellow mast support to the trailer feet towards the back.
Tie a ribbon to the bridle.
Remove the safety ropes. Put them in the box.
Un-bungee the rear rug and put the bungee cord and rug in the box.
Attach the tiller extension. Point it to the side away from the doc when you launch.
Put the yellow mast support on the trailer.
Bungee the yellow A frame and yellow mast support to the trailer feet towards the stern.
Remove the plug in the pipe, pull out the main, put it on the deck and put the plug back in and tighten it.
Put the life jacket, Hobie cooler, water bottle and paddle on the tramp.
Snap the Hobie cooler to the tramp.
Put the blue bottle in the Hobie cooler.
Remove your watch and put it in the trunk.
Remove everything from your pants and put them in the trunk.
Put baggy with the car keys and your comb in the left hand pocket.
Put the original handkerchief in the left hip pocket or right hip pocket depending.
Take the sailing watch out of the Hobie cooler and put it on.
Attach the glasses retainer.
Take the cell phone with lanyard out of the Hobie cooler and put it on.
Swap your street shoes for the water shoes. Or not.
Put on the smock or a jacket depending on how cold it is.
Put on the sailing gloves.
Tie the “anchor” to the crossbar towards the bow.
Put the instructions and box in the trunk.
Trailer it to the ramp.
Untie the tie-down ropes.
Dump the anchor somewhere convenient.
Launch the boat.
Park the car and trailer.
Turn the boat as directly into the wind as possible.
Attach the main to the halyard.
Check that the halyard and the other lines are clear so they don’t get tangled up with the main.
Raise the main. Set the nubbin in the holder in the top of the mast. If you can get it up to that point.
Attach the boom to the mast.
Use the snap shackle to attach the main sheet block to the boom.
Set the outhaul and downhaul.
Furl the jib until you want it.
Un-bungee the rudders. Put the bungees in the cooler.
P I C K U P T H E A N C H O R.
Push off.
Lower the rudders.
Sail some.
De-rig:
Sail to the dock, raise the rudders and tie it off or just dump the “anchor”.
Furl the jib.
Bungee the rudders.
Release the main sail downhaul and outhaul.
Detach the snap shackle from the boom.
Remove the boom gooseneck from the mast.
Turn the boat into the wind.
Lower the main and roll it up. Do this on the boat since is much harder when it is on the trailer.
Put one of the towels on the driver’s seat.
Back up the car to the appropriate ramp.
Paddle the boat to the trailer.
Attach the trailer winch to the boat.
Crank it up so the boat is in the correct location on the trailer.
Tie the boat to the trailer with the two front ropes with the trucker’s hitch.
Drive to the grassy area or parking lot spot to drop the mast. If it will get dark in the next hour and a half, drive the trailer under one of the lights or unhook the trailer from the car and use the car lights.
Tie the boat to the trailer with the two rear ropes with the trucker’s hitch.
Turn off the cell phone and put it in the cooler.
Put the sailing watch back in the Hobie cooler.
Put the eyeglass retainer in the Hobie cooler.
Put the Hobie tool in the cooler.
Put the sailing gloves in the cooler.
Put the Hobie cooler, life jacket, paddle in the trunk.
Put the instructions on the tramp.
Remove the plug in the pipe, insert the main/boom and put the plug back in. Tighten it up.
Toss the safety ropes near the port and starboard trapeze rings.
Toss the rear rug to the back of the tramp.
Take one of the rugs out of the box and put it on the front tramp crossbar. Bungee it in place.
Attach the base of the mast to the stepper fixture. Use the pin in the jar.
Un-bungee the yellow A frame and yellow mast support on the trailer on the front. Leave the bungee on the trailer.
Tie the mast safety ropes to the trapeze wires with a trucker’s hitch. TIGHT! Lines over the front of the tramp.
Attach the raise/lower rope to the winch.
Un-bungee the yellow A frame and yellow mast support on the rear of the trailer. Leave the cord on the trailer.
Set up the yellow mast support six feet back from the end of the rudders.
Take the other rug out of the box and bungee it to the rear of the tramp over the traveler..
Furl the jib if it wasn’t done earlier.
Remove the furler line from the jam cleat.
Attach the raise/lower rope to the winch. Take up any slack. Put enough tension on to release pressure on the jib furler.
Disconnect the jib stay from the furler. Put the pin back in the furler adjuster. Put the adjuster inside the halyard so it can’t unfurl.
Put the furler in the plastic bag in the box.
Lower the mast about half-way so you can attach the A frame to it.
Put the yellow A frame in place. Use the board to put the rope on the roller.
Make very sure the A frame is attached to the raise/lower rope or it will flop down! Could break the boat.
Lower the mast so it ends up on the yellow mast support.
Put the A-frame on the trailer.
Remove the mast side safety ropes and put them in the box.
Put the mast Teflon bearing in the jar.
Remove the pin from the mast stepper fixture and put it in the jar.
Put the jar in the box.
Lift the base of the mast onto the rug on the cross-bar.
Turn the mast so it faces to port.
Make sure the stays and jib are untangled and that they won’t catch on anything (like the mainsail pipe).
From the stern, slide the mast forward until it is close to trailer mast support.
Put the yellow mast support on the trailer.
From the bow, slide the mast forward and put it on the trailer mast support.
Bungee the base of the mast to the trailer mast support.
Un-bungee the front rug and put the rug and the bungee cord in the box.
Bungee the bow end of the yellow A frame and yellow mast support to the trailer.
Bungee the furler frame to the mast with one of the ball bungees.
Pull the stays, etc. to the back of the trailer.
Tie the end of the snorkel to the jib rotator on the mast.
Zip up the snorkel around the jib.
Bungee the snorkel to the tramp.
Velcro the stays to the tramp.
Bungee the mast to the rear crossbar/traveler.
Disconnect the tiller extension and slide in into the tramp ropes up the middle.
Bungee the stern end of the yellow A frame and yellow mast support to the trailer.
Put the box in the trunk.
Check that the trailer wires are connected and working.
One more walk-around to make sure you did everything. Boat to trailer tie-downs, sails bungeed, mast safety rope are in the box, rudders bungeed, yellow A frame, and yellow mast support bungeed. Hobie cooler, hat, paddle, cane and smock are in the trunk.
Put the water bottle in the car.
If you got wet, get into dry clothes that are in the trunk.
Put the stuff you took out of your pockets back in your pockets.
Swap your water shoes for your street shoes. Or not.
Get in the car. Turn on the heat or air.
Put the hat on the passenger seat.
Drive home.
Detach the trailer light wiring.
Remove the safety chains. Wrap them around the trailer holding the wiring off the ground.
Crank up the winch to get the trailer off the car hitch.
Park the car.
Open the gates.
Get the lawn mower from the shed and drive it to the front.
Attach the trailer to the lawnmower.
Drive the boat to the back and park it on the concrete slab.
Park the lawnmower in the shed.
Post sailing:
Go inside. Make something warm or cold to drink.
SHOWER even if you don’t think you need it. Wash off the water shoes and life jacket in the shower. Hang up the life jacket in the shower to dry and lean the shoes against the wall to dry. Put on new clothes so the ones that went sailing can be laundered.
REST A BIT.
Unpack the car.
Wet clothes, towels and hat to the laundry.
Start the laundry.
Unpack the Hobie cooler on the kitchen table.
Lay out anything wet on a towel to dry.
Wash off the sailing gloves. Put them on a towel on the table to dry.
Get the batteries in the sailing watch replaced if necessary. This can be done by a jeweler. There is one by Beryville that does this.
Charge the cell phone.
Wait for everything to dry.
Power down the cell phone.
Put the cell phone back in the cell phone waterproof bag.
Pack up the Hobie cooler: sailing watch, cell phone, information plaque, sailing gloves, glasses retainer, multi-tool and sun screen.
Dry clothes back in the dry-clothes bag.
Put the Hobie cooler, life jacket, dry clothes, two towels (one of them red), paddle, the box and the spare parts box in the closet.
